You’ve probably seen Chuck Dillehay, Creator/President of Dillehay Management Company and Founder of Skin, Bones, Hearts & Private Parts, as he has been opening our conferences with a bang for more than 10 years. But since he rarely has time to stay on-site for long – there’s always another conference to plan, speakers to book, and logistics to take care of – many of you may not really know him. So, let’s change that right now. Learn more about this dynamic leader with this quick interview!
Tell us a little about your career, pre-Skin Bones …
I’m an Atlanta native, and, like many aspiring teenagers, I wanted to get into the music business. There was a music business program south of Nashville, so I attended Middle Tennessee State University, pursuing a degree in mass communications with an emphasis in the music business. I worked some internships with record companies, which led to my first full-time job outside of college, with the Country Music Association. I was there for three years, and it was an incredible experience, meeting artists like Garth Brooks, Reba McIntyre, Brooks & Dunn, Billy Ray, Vince Gill … I was manager of membership development, with 6,000 members in 32 countries.I wanted to get back to Atlanta, though, and I next worked as vice president for an association management firm, which had many healthcare clients. Eight years later, in 2000, I started my own company, Dillehay Management Group.
What inspired you to launch Skin Bones?
I’m an entrepreneur at heart. As more and more healthcare societies were hiring us to manage their professional conventions, I couldn’t help but wonder what it would look like if we started our own line of medical education meetings. In 2011, we organized a pilot program at Walt Disney World in Florida over Labor Day Weekend, and we hoped for 50 attendees. We welcomed 150, and we knew we were on to something. We added another few destinations until we got to where we are today – 10 national events a year, at places where people can combine earning CME credits with a bit of a ‘destination vacation.’
What is Skin Bones’ ‘secret sauce’?
We format our conferences so that attendees can take home practical pearls of information that they can use to immediately help their patients. Our conferences are four days long, allowing attendees to take a very deep, intense dive into the topics of their choice. Our speakers are superstars; they’re leaders within their professions, they’re smart, they’re engaging. They make it fun. We want our attendees to feel educated, entertained, energized, and engaged. We’ll have one speaker for the full day, so people can really build a rapport. It’s an intimate, collegial setting. I think it’s also important that we meet in travel destinations; people enjoy coming for an incredible four days of education, networking, and relaxing during their off-time.
What do you love to do outside of work?
My pandemic hobby is gardening. My great grandfather was the head gardener at Piedmont Park in downtown Atlanta, and I’m enjoying honoring that tradition. I love my dog, a Goldendoodle. And I have two boys, 21 and 23, and a daughter, 18. I also still play piano, and my wife, Kim, sings. We also founded the Turn It Up Foundation, inspired by our son, Caleb, who was born deaf. The Foundation provides funding to elementary-age children who are deaf and hard of hearing so that they can pursue their musical interests, such as piano lessons, band instruments, and more.
We donate a percentage of our proceeds to the foundation and have to date donated $100,000. It’s our way of giving back, but also our way of sharing our love of music. |
